 Maxine Gadd's 'The Elf Queen'

Down in the ancient forest, there stands a mighty tree, and if you come you'll won't believe some of the things you'll see. For if you look into the hollow you'll see a tiny stair, which leads down to a village, and the fairies who live there. In the grandest of halls, they dance and dance all night, to pixies playing music, and twinkling fairy light. With mushroom steaks served on slate plates, and nectar in acorn cups, Queen Issy's drank too much, and now suffers with hicc-ups. The grand old elf is dancing, with great big pointed toes, and every time he stamps his foot, they tickle under his nose.The fairy princess is dancing, with the handsomest fairy men,she dances all around the  room, then waltzes round again. The music's getting louder, and shaking boughs on trees, and joining in the chorus, are the singing birds and bees. This is a happy place, no tears, but only laughter, and if you ever visit, you'll be happy ever after.

She was only about three inches high, but her tiny form was full of grace, and her eyes so bright and beautiful that they shone like stars. Her hair was the palest silver-gold, and she had a crown of diamonds and an amethyst wand that sparkled when she moved it. The scarf wreathed about her shoulders flashed all the colors of mother-of-pearl, and throwing it from her she hummed to herself a little song about violets and eglantine, and sweet musk roses. It is Titania who sings, Queen of the Fairies.

Seated on the edge of a mauve crocus was the
most delicious little being. She was dressed
all in filmy stuff the colour of the crocus.
A wreath of flowers was wound round her
wavy hair, and from her shoulders sprang a
pair of shimmering sheeny wings.

The mermaid was unhappy with her house,
All the bric-a-brac seemed so passe;
How she longed for a more modern cave,
One where starfish, hanging on nets
Played with the currents like watery frets,
And where passing fish might stop to marvel,
Tumbled from pirate ships of yore,
Snatched on it's way, to a rich Queen's parlor.
She longed for bracelets of glittering coral,
With a matching necklace, and a stole of Moray,
And an Octopus hat, that would turn all their heads-Except for sea-men on sea-wrecks,
so dead-It's hard being modern,
Down under the sea;
There are no malls there, like for you and me.
